Types Of Rugs – Top Three

Rugs come in many shapes and sizes and are such a common part of most households that we don’t give them much thought. However, the variety in styles and dimensions make them suitable for many different uses so it’s worth giving some thought to where they will end up within the home, or indeed outside the home in the case of an outdoor rug, before you start a search if you’re looking to buy an area rug or other kind of carpeting. Here are three of the most popular types.

Cotton Rugs

This type of rug is one of the less expensive varieties. It’s made from cotton and can be printed or woven in a variety of designs and colors. They are usually patterned or striped and can cheaply liven up a room. They serve many purposes and make good area rug runners, as they can usually be machine washed, but are also used as tapestries and even as a handy throw for covering furniture. They seldom have backing so they might be a be slippery on a highly polished floor.

Traditional Rugs

These kinds of rugs are those that are made in traditional styles by conventional means, usually hand-woven on a loom. This type of rug making has been around for centuries and is still widely used today from black area rugs to Oriental designs. Wool is a common material for making these but other natural fibers can be used as well. Persian carpets fall under this category. They tend to be more expensive, especially if they are antique and their prices usually correspond to their size, age and the region from which they come.

Contemporary Rugs

These are often machine produced and can be very durable. They often have heavy duty backing that prevents them from slipping and sliding on polished floors. They are useful in many situations including throws for furniture, round area rugs for small specific areas and carpet for stairs. They also come in hundreds of different designs and colors and can be mass produced since they tend to be machine made although the more expensive versions can be make by hand.
